1.3 Million Jobs in Florida at Risk

Taken right from CaptainsForCleanWater.org “Florida’s $9.7 billion fishing industry (129,000 jobs), $10.4 billion boating industry (83,000 jobs) and $89.1 billion tourism industry (1.1 million jobs) need healthy estuaries to exist.”

An estuary is a partially enclosed body of brackish water with one of more rivers or streams flowing into it with a free connection to the open sea. They are essential to the coastal ecosystems and wildlife of Florida. They are also the gates to our beautiful shores & beaches.

Estuaries on the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts alike are facing a disaster from the run-off from Lake Okeechobee.

How is this happening? The Herbert Hoover Dike is preventing the fresh water from flowing naturally south. Instead of flowing into and through the Everglades as it has throughout history, it overflows east and west.

In simplest terms, this is throwing off the ecosystem and causing disastrous results including algae blooms.
